Guest speaker: Liz Murrill- Solicitor General for the Louisiana Department of Justice
Title: Act 312, Legacy Suit Updates and CCUS
Liz Murrill is the Solicitor General for the Louisiana Department of Justice, appointed by Attorney General Jeff Landry in early 2016. She has almost 30 years of experience working in diverse state and federal government legal environments and handling complex litigation, appeals, and government transactions. She has argued before the Supreme Court of the United States in McCoy v. Louisiana and Ramos v. Louisiana and has argued in the Louisiana Supreme Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit Court, the D.C. Circuit, and the federal district courts as well as in state appellate and district courts. She is lead counsel in five pending federal lawsuits challenging a wide scope of abortion legislation, including June Medical Svcs. v. Gee, 15-880, in which the Supreme Court is currently considering a petition for certiorari by the plaintiffs. Murrill previously served as Executive Counsel to Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal and Executive Counsel to the Commissioner of Administration Kristy Nichols. She was a United States Supreme Court Judicial Fellow in 2007-08 and taught appellate advocacy and legal writing at the Louisiana State University Law Center for more than ten years. Murrill clerked for U.S. District Judge Frank J. Polozola and Louisiana First Circuit Court of Appeal Judge Melvin Shortess. She obtained her J.D. from LSU Law School in 1991, where she served as Editor in Chief of the Louisiana Law Review, and her L.L.M. in Alternative Dispute Resolution from Pepperdine Law School in 2010.
